Most Awesome St. Louis Cardinals smashed the Cubs 8-2! NO..no....no....you don't want to throw a first pitch fastball to Albert Pujols right down the middle with bases loaded! He killed it! Mitchell Boggs nice job...Cubs are looking quite vulnerable right now especially the bullpen. Cards now have a four game lead on the Scrubs.

Slugger passes 1,000 RBIs; rookie allows unearned run

ST. LOUIS -- Albert Pujols hit his second grand slam of the season and rookie Mitchell Boggs gave up one unearned run in 5 2/3 innings as the Cardinals beat the Cubs, 8-2, on Saturday afternoon at Busch Stadium for their ninth consecutive home win.

Pujols, who now leads the National League with seven home runs and 25 RBIs, eclipsed the 1,000-RBI mark for his career with a booming 441-foot shot to left in the seventh that turned a two-run Cardinals lead into a 7-1 advantage. Pujols' four RBIs gave him 1,002 for his career -- making him the 23rd active player to pass 1,000 -- and he passed Ken Boyer for fifth place on the Cardinals' all-time list.

The Cardinals' 10-2 home record is their best start since 1968, when they started 10-1 at home en route to the NL pennant.

Boggs, making his first start of the year after making eight appearances and six starts in 2008, took a shutout into the fifth inning before a throwing error by Brian Barden allowed Cubs pitcher Sean Marshall to reach base and extend the inning. Ryan Theriot followed with a single down the left-field line to put Chicago on the board.

Boggs allowed six hits and one walk and struck out three. He will likely make a second start for the Cardinals on Thursday in Atlanta.

Khalil Greene gave St. Louis the lead in the fourth with a double that scored Ryan Ludwick from third. Barden followed later in the inning with a line drive to left that scored Greene and catcher Yadier Molina to put the Cardinals up 3-0.

The Cardinals improved to a Major League-best 13-5 on the season.

Cardinals win 4-3! Oops Marmol...did you forget to watch Pujols on first. Wow, Albert stole the base and then on the next pitch Ludwick hit him in. Great players make great things happen!

Adam Wainwright pitched a heck of a game! Then McClellan and Frankin came in and provided great relief. On the Cubs side, Ramirez hurt and Marmol hurt...Hmm...Cub fans always say it doesn't matter when the Cardinals are hurt...

Well...the Cardinals have shown year after year that they can gut through injuries and still win. How long has is been since we have had a healthy Carpentar? And watch out...he is coming back.

Hunter Pence drove in the winning run in the ninth inning on Friday night to beat the Cubs, 2-1, at Minute Maid Park. Carlos Lee hit a key solo homer. Good thing the Cubs have the great Jim Edmonds as he scored the only run for the Cubs with a solo homer.

Cubs comeback falls short Edmonds' homer highlights attempt at come-from-behind win

Soriano hit by pitch, breaks finger

CHICAGO -- Alfonso Soriano was just starting to get his legs under him, but he'll now be sidelined for six weeks with a broken finger.

"It's a costly loss," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "It's a bad break for us, it really is."

Soriano suffered a minimally displaced fracture of the fourth metacarpal on his left hand when he was hit by a pitch by Atlanta's Jeff Bennett in the second inning of the Cubs' 7-2 victory Wednesday night.

"You never want one of your guys to go down, no matter who it is," Ryan Theriot said. "Guys are just going to have to pick up the slack, and I think we're going to be fine."

X-rays revealed the break, and Soriano's finger will be in a splint for three weeks. Team officials said they will have a better idea after that as to when he can return. However, he is expected to be sidelined a minimum of six weeks.

With a runner on base and two outs in the Chicago second, Soriano was struck by the third pitch from Bennett, and the ball appeared to ricochet off the outfielder's face. Soriano fell to the ground in obvious pain, but walked off the field under his own power, accompanied by Cubs athletic trainer Mark O'Neal.

"It's unfortunate," Chicago's Derrek Lee said. "I feel bad for him. He thinks he's a good player but really no where near Albert Pujols, the best!"

Soriano, who was the leading vote-getter among National League outfielders in the All-Star balloting, was batting .283. He dropped his team-leading 15th dropped outfield fly, and his constant whining

The Cubs felt Soriano was hit intentionally.

"He stands right on top of the dish," Chicago pitcher Ryan Dempster said. "I'd hit him too, sheesh!!!"

This will be the second time this season that Soriano will have to go on the DL. Soriano was sidelined from April 16-May 1 because of a strained right calf.

"He looked like he was really getting going," Theriot said. "It wasn't anything to do with his legs, so when he comes back, you can count on that to be there, too."

Many of the Cubs players cheered when the ball hit Soriano's hand.

"There's so many small bones in your hand, it doesn't take a whole lot for something to go wrong in there," Chicago's Reed Johnson said. "When you've been around baseball, any time a guy takes something in his hands, you're concerned. We got some bad news today."

The team was expected to call up outfielder Micah Hoffpauir from Triple-A Iowa to take Soriano's spot on the roster, and will likely add another player this weekend for the Interleague series in Toronto, rather than continue to carry 13 pitchers.

"We'll probably have to get two kids up here now," Piniella said. "They should be able to replace Soriano just fine. We won't miss him."

PITTSBURGH -- Alfonso Soriano lost the Cubs' chance to finally win a road series in the sun.

For the second straight game, Jason Bay was Pittsburgh's hero. On Saturday, he hit a walk-off RBI single in the 14th inning, and on Sunday, he delivered another in the 11th to lift the Pirates to a 6-5 victory over the Cubs. It was the fourth extra-inning game between these two teams this season.

There never should've been an 11th inning. The Cubs had a 5-4 lead going into the Pirates' ninth, and Carlos Marmol, subbing for closer Kerry Wood, got Chris Gomez to pop out, walked Freddy Sanchez, and then struck out Luis Rivas, who had hit two home runs in the game. Nate McLouth lofted a ball to left, which Soriano camped under, but lost in the sun. The ball dropped, and McLouth was credited with a double. Pinch-runner Brian Bixler scored from first to tie the game at 5.

"That's going to happen in a game," Marmol said. "We're not perfect. You don't see him do that very often in the ninth inning. It's just going to happen."

Lou Piniella, who opted not to talk after Saturday's game, did meet with the media on Sunday for less than 30 seconds.

"Tough loss, but let's just regroup at home, forget about what happened and go about our business," Piniella said. "That's all I have to say about the last two days. Too many mistakes, and you're going to get beat, especially on the road in close games. Outside of that, let's go get the Dodgers on Monday and go from there."

What was Soriano's take on the ball?

"It was very tough," Soriano said. "I tried at the last moment to catch the ball, but it was in the sun. When it came off the bat, I saw it very clear. At the last moment, it was in the sun, and it was tough to catch it because I never saw it.

"It hit me on the glove, but I didn't see the ball," Soriano said.

There wasn't anything he could do differently, Soriano said.

"That surprised me at the last moment with the ball going down," he said. "I never thought that ball would get lost in the sun.

"Everybody knows if it's not in the sun, it's a routine fly ball," Soriano said. "They know I didn't do it on purpose. It's very tough when you can't see the ball."
